With a very worried look, Jane, the new leader of the Pillars, assembles her members in their guild hall.
"My friends, something is about to happen. Something bigger than you have seen before", with those words, she throws a paper over the table. A letter.
"Read it", she encourages her slightly confused members with a smile.
Why would Jane let you read this? It is adressed to her and you see a warning in red letters above of it:
A letter to Jane Hairje - Confident
You open the letter and start to read.
Dearest Jane,
Me and our brother Teleco had heard rumours about a mysterious cave in Marali territory a while ago. We had decided to visit it together someday, but destiny brought me to be the first of us two to see it. Later on, I heard that it was a Mercenaries' nest. I warned our brother, that it wasn't good to annoy Mercenaries. Especially not in a minority. He insisted and I finally gave in - not without consequences.
It was a dreary evening - perfect for a hunt between friends. Robert and Teleco were joking around, playing with the thought of bugging the Mercenaries. I was laughing too. Laughing - I didn't know what was about to happen.
Somehow we really ended up at the Mercenaries' Cave. I didn't know I would remember the way, but there we were. They had planted trees in front of the tiny hole in the rock, which they used as entrance, but I could still see it. Following the others, I jumped down the ladder into the cave.
Darkness. Everywhere darkness. Only the torches on the wall would give us enough light to see that there was nothing in this cavern. Teleco felt his way to a closed door, trying not to stumble over a skull. Robert followed him. Entire silence surrounded us, when suddenly - someone banged on the wooden door. I couldn't see clearly, but I heard Robert's voice: "Hello!", he yelled. Teleco, eager to bring us into danger, banged against the door repeatedly. I mumbled a prayer. Those fools kept banging.
"Stop it! I hear steps. Very close to the door. Stop, for the Goddess sake!", I ordered them awkwardly, but it was too late. We heard a key turning in the keyhole.
A man in chain armor opened the door. "You are not welcome here", I heard his somber voice. Not a melodious sound. A heavy cawing. "Jassen!", Robert gasped.
In a blink of an eye, him and me spinned on our heels and found ourselves outside of the cavern, confronted to an army of Mercenaries, while our brother was stealthed somewhere around us. Robert pushed me back in and we both called out: "Mercenaries outside!"
Jassen, obviously annoyed by our foolish attempt of flight, slowly approached us. He would call them back off if we would leave right away, he said. We agreed and followed him outside. Too early, as it seemed. Jassen didn't have time to give his command and his men swooped me down. I did not survive the attack of the six brutes. Jassen went back inside, Robert close behind him.
Teleco, too worried about me, didn't see him leave. Our dear brother immediatly sent a message to the Cleric Iceane, who made the long way from Mirith to Marali to save me, the Goddess may protect him. My husband Fang also rushed to my rescue.
Robert showed up shortly before my saviors appeared. Teleco asked him what Jassen told him, but my friend Robert refused to give answer, which seemed a bit strange to me, but I didn't puzzle over it too long. Although now, that I am thinking about it...I cannot disclose the information he has given...I cannot tell you...
The words he had used sounded so fake in his mouth...
However, me and my companions were reporting the happenings to Major Cesca Andon later on. She didn't seem pleased to hear about that camp.
Now you know what held me back from meeting you, my loved sister. I will visit you as soon as I can. Take good care meanwhile.
Hugs and kisses,
Claire
As soon as you've finished, you give the letter to the one next to you.
